"When my husband and I heard about our friend's situation, I had to do something."

How it began...

The passing of a friend was not a surprise. He was in Hospice and as his wife described, "melting away". We hoped that she was prepared financially to handle life without him. We found out that things were not going as well as we hoped. When my husband and I heard about my friend's situation, I had to do something. Her income decreased and her rent increased. She lives in a neighborhood less conducive to a single woman. What could we do? How many widows are in her situation? Are there widowers who need support? Those questions prompted us to start Widow's Nest.

With the help of the WN board and supporters, we will be able to help widow and widowers go through the grieving process without the burden of financial insecurity. We will walk beside them with financial, emotional, and spiritual support.

The Vision

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”

Proverbs 16:3

The pages of this site outline our long-term goals. Attaining those goals will allow us to fully function toward our mission. There are several milestones that we must reach to get us to that point. Below are the three we are pressing toward in 2024.

Financial:

  • Raise funds to assist widow with significant downpayment on condo in desired neighborhood ($50k) - After completing financial literacy and a first-time home buyer program, Widow's Nest will provide a downpayment to lessen monthly housing expenses to what is affordable. Funds raised above the goal amount will be used for operational cost, which include legal fees, accounting consultation, fall fundraising costs, etc.
  • Marketing and social media support ($5k) - A marketing agency will be hired to assist with exposure and consistent content delivery.

Emotional/Spiritual:

  • Host events geared to foster community among widows, widowers, and their supporters in the tri-county area, which includes Hamilton, Hancock, and Marion counties.
